New Gallery and Studio Space Brings Art to the Hop Market

Lewis Graham, a ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester Fine Art graduate, is curating shows with contemporary artists focusing on the landscape, as he champions creativity in the city through his new venue Noble and Common.

“I’m a landscape painter,” said Lewis. “I’m really fascinated by contemporary landscape art, and now I have the chance to put on exhibitions which bring together artists whose work really compliments together.”

The gallery’s current exhibition, Hops Vs Art, nods to the venue’s past while exploring its present uses. “It plays on the history of the Hop Market and the sale of hops, and how that correlates to the art market,” said Lewis. “We’ve got six artists on show right now, and their work is available to buy.”

While the gallery is currently open by appointment, Lewis hopes to expand its hours in the future. He said: “I’m balancing this long-term goal with my day job at the moment, but the aim is to make it financially sustainable so I can be here more often.”

Originally from Halesowen, Lewis enjoyed his time studying in the city so much he has made it his permanent home. Opening the gallery and studio is a big step for him, but it’s not the first time he has put his work out there.

“At the ºüÀêÊÓƵ, we had the Art House which is such a massive space,” said Lewis. “I’d go in after hours when my lectures had finished and started painting large pieces. I had lots of opportunities to exhibit my artwork at university, entering competitions, and even showing my work at the Worcester Museum.”

Lewis credits his lecturers for encouraging him to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom. One of them, Nathaniel Pitt, remembers Lewis as a standout student.

“I opened my first gallery in Worcester in 2013,” said Nathaniel. “I’ve always championed the idea of students self-organising and building their own art scene.”

He added: “Lewis has always been a confident and driven artist, and to see him managing a gallery and studio right in the heart of Worcester is incredibly inspiring. The city should be proud to have him as part of its cultural fabric.”
